What’s New?
There’s been a new announcement from the Ion Park Ford battery research team: lithium-manganese-rich batteries are coming soon. Engineers have worked on this battery design for decades, as it provides more energy density and more voltage right out of the gate. This system has historically had issues maintaining voltage, but this new announcement implies they’ve found a way to make the design work for EVs.
NMC Batteries
Most Ford EVs run on NMC batteries, also known as nickel-manganese-cobalt. You’ll find this type of battery in vehicles like the 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning, an electric truck with up to 320 miles of range. You’ll also find this design in the 89-kW battery of the 2025 Ford E-Transit van, but a potential future upgrade may appear across the Ford lineup.
LFP Batteries
Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries (abbreviated as LFP, with iron represented as “Fe”) were the most recent battery technology development from the Ford Motor Company. Right now, you can find this battery in the standard powertrain for the 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E. With up to 260 miles of range and up to an available 480 horsepower, this electric sports car gives you a picture of the future of Ford driving.
